I do have very very limited web access atm, although my son doesn't know I leap on his computer just occassionally to check up on whats going on. Still no timeline on when my computer will be up and running (nudge Thoraf) However, I got this sent to me by a friend and I'm buggered if I can figure out how it works. it's all based on multiples of 9 take a two digit number, with digits AB add the digits together A+B and subtract them from the original number AB AB - B = A0, a multiple of 10 A0 - A = 90% of A0, a multiple of 9 therefore putting the magic symbol on every multiple of 9 guarantees you "guess" right. personally I prefer the ones that result in a guaranteed number - this one is just too wishy washy Boppin <hr /> Who me? ok, let's try again. Directions for use 1. Pick any two digit number. eg. 37 2. Add the two digits together. eg. 3 + 7 = 10 3. Subtract the result of step 2 from step 1. eg. 37 - 10 = 27 The result, regardless of the two digit number you pick will be a multiple of nine, and all multiples of nine on the chart have the same symbol next to them. Why are all answers a multiple of nine? Your two digit number consists of the number of tens and the number of units. eg. 37 = 3 lots of 10 and 7 units To show this for any two digit number, let's call the number of tens in your number A, and the number of units is B. So your number would look like this: (A x 10) + B eg. if the number was 37, A would be 3 and B would be 7 giving (3 x 10) + 7 = 30 +7 = 37 Step 2 and 3 of the problem can actually be combined and rewritten to say "Subtract the number of tens and the number of units from your starting number" or: ((A x 10) + B) - A - B eg ((3 x 10) + 7) - 3 - 7 = 27 which can also be written as: (A x 10) - A + (B - B) eg. (3 x 10) - 3 + (7 - 7) = 27 obviously (B - B) = 0, so it never matters what the units of our initial choice are, and we get left with: (A x 10) - A eg. (3 x 10) - 3 = 27 which simplified further is: (A x 9) eg (3 x 9) = 27 Therefore, for any two digit number, your final answer will be a multiple of nine, and for the "psychic" to guess the right symbol the table only needs to put that symbol in the position of every multiple of nine (9, 18, 27, etc) I'm not sure I can explain it any more clearly than that, the mathematics involved isn't anything special. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o"> Boppin <hr /> Who me? Ummm - I still don't get it, but then Maths was never my strong point. What I don't understand, given everything is multiples of 9 and there are over 20 or something symbols, is how does it flash up the right symbol. I've tried it around 30-40 times and each time the symbol of the number i wanted was correct, each time the symbol was different to the previous symbols etc. I mean, I could understand it if the same symbol popped up for every 9th number or something - oops now I'm getting really confused - oh well nm Miruwin

Miruwin, the symbols in the list are randomly assigned every time you load the page, but the important thing is that the same symbol will appear for every multiple of nine on that page. One time it might be $, another time it might be # or @ but they will always be the same for every multiple of nine. Boppin <hr /> Who me?
