I use this on most cookies that need icing ( or my grand angels want to ice cakes or whatever )
1 cup icing sugar
1 TBSP butter
1 tsp flavoring of your choice .. vanilla, almond, brandy, cherry, coconut, or lemon juice.
Milk
In a small bowl combine icing sugar, butter and flavoring, add just enough milk to make icing spreadable.
Enjoy

That's usually the way I was taught to make icing. Although used boiling water and not milk.
For falvouring I always like using strawberry quick.
