Mum's Speedy Steamed Pudding

Here's another nice quick winter warmer

Boil together 1 cup of milk, 1 tablespoon butter, 2 tablespoons sugar (I like brown sugar in this).
Remove from heat and add 1 teaspoon bicarb soda and 1 cup of pitted dates.
Beat well and cool slightly
Add 1 cup of self raising flour and place in a greased basin inside a saucepan with enough boiling water to come about half way up the outside of the basin
Boil gently with lid on the saucepan for about 30 mins. (Obviously lid needs to be well fitting, if not you may need to add boiling water during the steaming process but it is advisable not to remove the lid)

Serve with fresh cream or ice cream or real stirred custard. (OK you can buy that nasty prepared custard if you must)

In college I half lived off those Steamed puds in a tin. The treacle onces were my fave. With custard of course, gotta be custard!

Never knew how to make em before, that sounds very doable.

Miru, the chance of me ever cooking in the near future is remote hehe. Unless I try to have a dinner party in my bachelor pad one day... nah!
