I do like a nice bit o' drummin'

Post by Melodionxxx »

Ian Paice has been my hero for years, he just got a sweet funky feel, and a bit of old-school class compared to the double bass drum meatheads you get now. Ignore the drivelsome guitars and wait for the break and as you get mesmerised by the madness, notice the highhat never stops tickin:
Ian Paice

Often regarded as a 'meathead' John Bonham had the deftest funkiest touch. Check how 'tuneful' his toms are, non of this single headed cardboard boxy crap. Proper tuned drums 4tw. A thoughtful solo, no meatheadness here! Even a bit of hands-free action. It goes on a bit tho but the bare hand drummin is pretty special:
JB rocks!
And listen to the way he strides across the beat in Kashmir, understated collosal genius. It's the drums that make it:
Kashmere

Ok, back to some deep classy funkyness. Heard of Richie Hayward? Nah, thought not. Heard of Little Feat? Maybe =) Here's a man with the most perfect touch you ever heard, tight as one of the hedgehogs from teh cute. He could keep the song going through the solo like you can hear it in the back of your head, never loses the groove for a second while going insane. And man could he rawk. One of my all time favourites:
The Fatman in the Bathtub Solos

Manu Katche, another name seldom heard. But came to light with Youssou N'Dour, and often plays with Peter Gabriel. One of those drummers who is instantly recognisable for his own style. A very musical drummer with a delicate groove that can't be matched. Still retains a lot of African influence from Senegal. Like nobody else. Check out this deeply intense solo:
Manu Katche

Yah and of course... Neil Peart... (Rush you n00b) High on tech, bit low on funkiness for my taste, but worshipped around the world.
Mr Peart
And u want proof of the obsession he inspires in the rock world, someone made a CGI move with his entire performance motion captured... Something unhealthy =) Some folks need to get out more!
Cyber Peart

Q:How many drummers does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: 10, 1 to change the lightbulb and 9 other to discuss how Steve Gadd would have done it.
The ultimate technical drummer, so laid back and lazy he is barely awake. But anyone who knows '50 ways to leave your lover' know him. I find him a bit soul-less but that's drummer heresy. The most delicate touch in the biz:
Gadd Flies

An honourable mention to Lenny White. Bit too jazzy for my taste but compared to most, very accessible
Lenny

The modern guys: Chad Wackerman, Terry Bozzio, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colauita et al. Mammoth stupendous technique if you wanna be blown away by sheer skill go and check any vids you can find. Heres some Chad Wackerman just cos his name is so cool for a drummer:
Flash bugger
Bah, you can't forget Vinnie. Discovered by Frank Zappa, and just a totally, utterly, scary fkn machine of a drummer.
Vinnie the Pooh

Hey... it's better than workin!
