Hi All,

Dunno how its happened because I don't go to any of those wierd internet sites but my credit card has been used to purchase subscriptions to some porn sites. My card is fairly new, (January this year) Has never been out of my possession, has been used only once online, has been given over the phone to only one company. So far the little bastard that got me has used $300 of my hard earned cash.

So I would suggest all of you very carefully check your statements for any illegal transactions. Apparently its rife at the moment.

It might be possible that someone has gone through your garbage and found an old credit card swipe receipt. So it might not be connected to using your card online.

Make sure you dispose of credit card receipts carefully.

I dumped a swiped Amex receipt in a bin in Hong Kong once, when I arrived in NZ every time i used my Amex card I had to speak to an Amex rep on the phone. When I asked why, it turned out someone had made a copy card using the info off the receipt and had been using it in Japan. Amex computer system had flagged that the same card had been used at the same time in two different countries. Was very impressed with Amex.

Someone else had that problem on LJ and this was one of the responses:
Mastercard and Visa had a data spill recently and close to 130,000 Australian masterCard holders and unknown number of visa card holders have had thier details nicked.
So, be aware. The banks know about it so shouldn't challenge you claiming a fraudulent charge. I'd cancel the card now that you know it's one of the numbers though.

Yep, my card company contacted me a week ago. They said that there had been a problem and I had some 'suspicious' transactions and for safety they were cancelling that card and reissuing me with a new one. So they were onto the problem well ahead of me.

Meanwhile back at the ranch I have managed to find the name the person used and his email address which I have passed on to the Visa card company and have emailled the billing sites regarding refunds. One company is doing the refund even as we speak and I'm still waiting to hear back from the other.

my friend had her credit card used for over $500 in Russia.. she was cheerfully refunded the charges but still a stress nobody needs added to their lives..

they can also get the numbers from your statements if you throw them out, as well as carbons from the stores garbage bins ( ask for any carbon paper used on swipe machines as well )

good dective work Miru.. now if I were you.. Id research a bit on the person and, ( of course staying on the right side of the law, or carefully avoiding notice ) give them a taste of their own.

its pretty easy to get someones address, phone number... would be hard to pull internet scams if someone called the utilities dept and identified themself as you and requested your power and phone be shut off during your upcoming extended vacation.... /cough...

Banks will wear the loss if the transaction is fraudulent....I also know that NAB has a program that looks for unusual spending patterns on peoples credit cards (probably the system used to detect the transaction in Mir's case) so they can try to ward off too much loss.

Being a bank manager we make our staff view videos on card fraud often. One thing people dont realise is the larger syndicates that use cards for fraud have a tiny "swipe type" machine that they can run your card through and it retains the details from the magnetic strip on the back of the card. This means you should never let your card out of your sight, eg: no giving it to the restaurant waiter for him to take away and process. It is a very common way for your details to be obtained, they then sell the details on and a duplicate card is made with your number on it.

So even paying for something in a shop, make sure it is processed in front of you. A lot of larger stores have taken to not "touching" your card, you have to swipe it in the machine, while it looks like they are being picky, its a good way to go. One other security step companies are taking is to request the 3 digit number on the back of the card, for further verification, as that number is not part of the card number.

lol Wow Tent, blast from the past. The swipe mashines are like something we only have in super ancient soddy resturants here (used to be the only way to go tho), while in most cases (stores, BBQ-houses, hotdog-stands, DMV, etc, etc, etc) they have a slot thingy at the walkthrough, that lets people swipe it through.

Oh no the swipe machines i was talking about are small devices not much longer than a card and are just deep enough to run the card through. They are illegal and are designed to record the info from the magnetic strip so that a duplicate card can be made and used illegally...

Although.... we still have the swipe machines in some places.....but a lot now are the slot in ones :P

Didi anyone else miss the thong girl being happy to have Turook doing a grenade impression on her.....

/mouth hangs open.

I had a friend once that had her details kept in a video shop. She came to australia and checked her statement 5 days later and found 3000$ US worth of charges that wernt hers on it. Banks were a pain in the ass to work with to resolve this she had to do something with the governement in America in the state that the fraud occured in - took months wasnt a happy thing.
