... I'm sure just about anyone can answer this one and I feel like an idiot for asking but...
Socketing gems/whatever... How the heck does that work again??

Augments.... You get one that is designed for a particular armour slot, then a particular slot type. meaning if the armour has a Slot 7 on it your augment must go into that type of Armour and additionally that slot number
Arms/Legs/Hat/Rings slot 7/8 augment will go into any Arms, Legs, Hat, Rings armour piece that has either a 7 or 8 numbered slot in it.
7 universal for group armour
8 for raid armour
there are others tho now like 4, 3, 1, 9, 11, 12 etc which all have their own uses

Oh sorry I meant how is the act of socketing one in place done? Right click? Drop it on the gear? /slash command to open a window I totally have forgotten about?
I am sure this one has an easy one line answer.

Just need to find a bird bath, can find at any of the LDoN Camps or in Guild Hall/Guild Lobby and left click on it
This brings up a combine window where you place item and aug in and hit combine

Augmentation pool, aka bird bath, use it much like forge. You use it to put and remove augs from the equipments.

Also one by taking the first right when zoning into the bazaar.
Vendor next to it also sells the distillers for removing them too.
