FFXI (with Review)

I'm currently playing on Titan as Vilk lvl 9 Thief soon to be Thief/Ninja. Shoot us a tell, if ya interested in playing can organise a world pass etc etc.. couple of us aussies playing atm. I like it at the moment. It's a extremely pretty game and surprisingly it doesn't effect your lag. For example. I play at 1200x1024 with 1024 res rendering. mip mapping enabled same with bip mapping (used on the higher end g4 cards) and no compression and it run's fine. The controls are fkn weird, so be prepared. It's nothing like SB or eq etc in terms of controls. The setup im using at the moment is compact keyboard and a Playstation 2 to PC converter. So.. at home.. i either wheel my couch or chair around and play with a wireless keyboard and ps2 controller. Makes a fkn hell of a difference. Battle system. Battle System is exactly like any FF type game. It reminds me heavily on FF7 or FFX. You have your black magic, white magic, your specials (you need over 100% in your TP to use a special). Specials also come with your weapon skills. So like EQ you attack a monster and if your using sword, your sword skill will go up. If you hit 10 skill points a new weapon skill for sword might come available for you to use. Each class has passive and none passive skills. For example im currently playing a Thief. At lvl4 I got Steal which needs to be triggered. But at like 5 I think i got Evasion1 which doesn't need to be triggered it's just there. Monsters etc... Like EQ you go out and kill shit.. some will drop items/money some wont. There are some camps, but other monsters are random.. kinda like fighting in DL or GFAY. Spawn here and there. Now an interesting thing I have read is that if you die, it gives the monsters a advantage over control of the land, so in theory more should spawn. I have come across some named monsters aswell which are triggered or on a timer to spawn. Rare items drop from these just like EQ. Another interesting thing, is depending on the weather or time of day, this will spawn different monsters. So at night you have undead, during the day you don’t. Electrical storm might spawn Elemental type monsters etc etc. The beauty of the game i have seen at the moment the economy. Each player has the ability to play with the economy. Example. I go exping for a couple hours... come back with 12 water crystals, some armour, some vegetables, 12 fire crystals, 12 earth crystals etc etc. I goto the Auction House and place these items for auction. Kinda like the Bazaar in EQ but you dont have to stand there.. you check all the items up for sale.. like a big list, check the price history and then place your stacks or items for sale. You can place up to 7 or 9 items/stacks for sale... then continue on your exp run. Go back later to the AH (Auction House) to check the status of your sale. Good thing is, is that any item you place for sale removes it from your inventory. Now all items which are sold go to your MOG house (Yes you get your very own house to fit out with shit and you can even design a garden) which you goto to collect your cash. They even have the idea of creating your own personal Bazaar, where again you can set prices for your own personal items. Quests... Well there are quests like any mmorpg which seem to be cool (haven’t really tried any yet) and there are also missions. Missions range from town to town which increase your fame/status for your region. I guess with enough points you can start buying or crafting your own race/class armour. There are also tradeskills/crafting available for all you people to make me new armour or weapons. This reflects heavily on the players economy since alot of people buy the items to use in crafting from the AH and then they sell there own products back on the AH. At the moment there’s no PVP so sorry =P There are mounts those giant yellow KFC fkn things Kinda my semi complete writeup, all i can think of. Sweet Tem! Yeah controls are fucked, i recomend putting the keyboard on compact mode. I should be on tonight sometime so i'll shoot you a tell or vise versa, gonna try get lvl10. On a plus note made like 7000gil while I slept at the auction house, so i can buy world passes now =) Another thing I forgot the mention with FFXI. Is the exp. Exp is done real different to any other game.. For example if you solo and fight monsters that are even con or a little bit higher, don't expect to get anything more than 120exp. Yep 120exp eheh none of this 2000exp etc.. but say for lvl10 i need 2400 exp which isnt much. Now from my experiance it looks like the max lvls in a group can go 3 either way. So a lvl6 can group with a lvl9 etc etc. Anything more than this, and the exp is that shit that its not worth it. Which also makes it hard to power people. That said though, you have the ability to change or swap jobs. So if people are real low compared to you, you can also swap into a lvl1 white mage and start again. When they log off you can swap back to your lvl50 Warrior for example. Yeah I have it in compact atm, it's not half bad once you get used to it. Whats your char's name scatt? I assume it's Scattrick? Trying to get my war to 15 and completing missions/quests before i move to jueno and do the crapo 6 hour giant chicken quest.
