Basically any middle of the range computer gear is good then add a nice monitor and the most expensive video card you can buy. If you get a Dual core or hyperthreading machine you will need to tinker a little to get EQ working afterwards but the rest is cake.
I would plan with 2 GB of ram tho
Mazia,
I ended up getting a Dual core...what kind of tinkering will i need to do to get EQ working again? I receive my new pc tomorrow...wanted to get it going before this weekend
1.2 signup for WinEQ 2.0 (free) and set it up. WinEQ was written by a guy that uses a Dual Core setup so this automatically uses a single core per instance of EQ. Does a bloody good job of it also.
2. Find and setup a shortcut to a command line mode app called runfirst.exe. This does the same thing basically but is just a little app. This method wont let you skip the patcher step.
The manual mode is when your running the patcher. Bring up task manager and set the processor affinity for the patcher process to one of the cores. Any subsequent child process will spawn with the same settings. Well thats what they say happens and it works but its a pain remembering to do it each time.
Well, got my new pc delivered here today at work, spent a few mins setting it up, then copied the EQ files from my work laptop to my new pc. Was eager, i wanted to log on eq while on my lunch break to "test it out". I hit the eq icon, it patched in like 2 seconds (no downloads were necessary). Logged in, took a few seconds to get to my character screen, it was definitely alot faster than my laptop that ive gotten use to. selected my character who was camped in PoK. Took about 30 seconds to zone him in. My laptop was about a 5 min long process getting to the character screen and about a 2 min login time to get into the zone. Anyways, i log my toon in PoK, and WOW, i was surprised at what i saw. I saw buildings, trees, rocks, etc. I was use to having the clip plane on 0 and pretty much looking straight down to run place to place on my laptop. I turned the clip plane to almost max and ran throughout the zone, not 1 time did the framerate lag. I loved it. I decided to zone into the bazaar, which was the worse zone to play in while on the laptop, especially near the traders. It would seriously take me 10 seconds of framerate lag to go from 1 trader to the next.
I get into bazaar and run to the red trader section and all i can say is wow, i was running past trader to trader with no sign of pc lag. Im very happy with my setup that i got.
Im still working on getting wineq installed and working properly, only had about 5 mins to tinker with it. Try to log on using it at the last minute that i had left for lunch it my eq was saved under c/program files/sony/everquest, and it requested that the path be c/program files/everquest. (i had an additional "sony" in the path). I copied the files over to the path it wanted, but i didnt have time to try it out. I hoped that works.
Anyways, thanks for the help getting me started, im looking forward to getting home tonight and getting my new pc setup at my crib for some good ole eq fun...
